The commercial decision
A factory tour is useful, but supplier nomination needs records that can survive after the visitors leave. Five evidence packets reveal more than a polished line walk: product definition, manufacturing control, validation, compliance and delivery governance.
What the evidence can support
The product packet should contain the controlled specification, BOM and drawings. The process packet should show a control plan, work instructions, calibrated test equipment and nonconformance records. Validation should include raw performance and endurance data. Compliance should identify the exact model and critical components. Delivery evidence should show capacity assumptions, sub-suppliers, packaging validation and change notification.
A repeatable way to compare suppliers
Sample one real production or pilot lot and trace it backwards from finished serial or date code to incoming material. Ask who approved each document, when it was revised and how an operator knows the current version. Score missing evidence separately from failed evidence; a promise to create a record after nomination is not the same as an operating control.
Cost and launch consequences
Use weighted gates rather than a single audit percentage. A missing calibration record may be correctable, while an untraceable safety-critical heater or uncontrolled firmware release can block nomination. Assign a closure owner and due date to every condition and verify critical actions during the pilot build.
Boundaries on the claim
ISO 9001 certification can support confidence in a quality system, but it does not prove that a specific oven meets your specification. Likewise, a certificate bearing a similar model name may not cover the nominated construction. Match evidence to the exact factory, line, BOM and market variant.
