The commercial decision

The control panel is not only styling. It determines how settings are communicated, how many states software must manage, how easily the product can be serviced and how the interface survives heat, steam, grease and cleaning.

What the evidence can support

Mechanical controls reduce software states but introduce timer, thermostat, shaft and marking tolerances. Digital controls support presets and feedback but add firmware, display, EMC and standby considerations. In-mould decoration can create a durable integrated surface, yet artwork, colour, moulding and touch alignment require disciplined process control.

A repeatable way to compare suppliers

Run uncoached tasks for power, temperature, time, preset change, pause and recovery after power interruption. Measure knob torque and alignment, touch response with dry and damp fingers, display readability at viewing angles, marking durability and behaviour near steam. Include fault and lockout states, not only the normal demo flow.

Cost and launch consequences

Choose the simplest interface that supports the product promise and price tier. Cost tooling, software validation, multilingual markings, service modules and unique parts. A premium panel that raises returns or firmware revisions can erase its ticket-price advantage.

Boundaries on the claim

IMD is a manufacturing process, not a guarantee of premium durability, and digital does not automatically mean easier use. Approval should be based on finished-panel evidence from the nominated process.
