The commercial decision
Home-friendly design is not a soft styling phrase. It is a set of physical interactions: fitting the counter, opening the door, reaching the controls, reading the display, removing hot food, handling crumbs, cleaning surfaces and storing accessories.
What the evidence can support
Translate each interaction into a measurement or observed task. Record appliance and door-open dimensions, rear-cord bend, control height, display contrast, operating force, alarm level, tray grip clearance, crumb paths and the number of cleaning steps. Use participants who did not design the product.
A repeatable way to compare suppliers
Test first use from the sealed carton, normal cooking and cleaning with production instructions. Include shorter and taller users, different vision and dexterity needs, and realistic kitchen lighting. Capture errors and workarounds instead of coaching them away. Accessibility guidance can inform digital content, while physical-product requirements need their own human-factors review.
Cost and launch consequences
Observed friction guides industrial design and prevents decorative features from consuming useful space. It also improves product-page dimensions, packaging diagrams and support content. Small fixes such as visible rack labels or a tray that clears the door can have more customer value than another preset.
Boundaries on the claim
A single internal focus group is not representative market research. Document participant profile and task, and use findings to identify risks for broader validation rather than claiming universal preference.
