The commercial decision
A long-term factory is not simply the supplier with the best first sample or lowest quotation. It is the organisation that can keep a controlled product stable, disclose changes, recover from problems and support market evidence across repeated orders.
What the evidence can support
Score seven dimensions separately: product engineering, process capability, quality system, compliance governance, schedulable capacity, supply-chain resilience and commercial communication. For each score, require a record from a real product: drawing change, calibration, nonconformance, pilot yield, capacity plan, supplier approval or corrective action.
A repeatable way to compare suppliers
Audit one value stream from incoming critical parts through assembly, electrical testing, cooking or functional verification, packaging and release. Compare stated capacity with cycle times, bottleneck stations, staffing, changeovers and current loading. Verify how the factory controls subcontractors and how quickly it notifies customers of component changes.
Cost and launch consequences
Use a nomination scorecard with disqualifying risks and a 90-day closure plan. Agree forecast cadence, order freeze windows, spare parts, warranty analysis, escalation contacts and stop-ship authority. Review the score after pilot and after the first production quarter; capability must be demonstrated over time.
Boundaries on the claim
A management-system certificate is useful evidence, not a guarantee of product capability or financial stability. Financial and legal due diligence should be performed by qualified parties, and factory evidence should be refreshed when ownership, location, key processes or critical suppliers change.
